Myth Confirmed: The developers at Epic Games do not sleep.
Or, at least, I don’t see how they possibly could. Seems to me like they’ve been rolling out a new Fortnite patch every week and a half, which is nothing short of an insane effort from a design perspective. This game gets content updates almost as frequently as Overwatch did in its early days, which is striking since the birth of Overwatch was patched so frequently since there was so much that needed urgent balance adjustments. In Fortnite, however, despite the strengths of shotguns and building against every single other playstyle (Something that Epic games have formally addressed and promised will be changing) the game seems quite well balanced overall. Ah, well, I’m certainly not complaining. Bring out The Drum Gun!
The Drum Gun is the newest addition to Fortnite’s ever-expanding line of weapons. In addition to being introduced in Fortnite’s hyper-popular Battle Royale mode, the weapon is also being balanced and will be introduced in the 4-player Cooperative Save The World Mode.
According to the official Patch Notes on Epic’s website, the Drum Gun combines “The stopping power of a rifle and the fire rate of an SMG”. Which probably means it will serve as somewhat of a midway point between those two weapon classes. The weapon is available as a drop in uncommon and rare variants; It will never drop as a common weapon.
The Save The World mode is also getting two new exclusive pieces of content: The Stink Bomb is a new grenade type that releases a stink-cloud of AOE damage over time on a certain area, and the Freedom Pistol is an especially patriotic hand cannon that, true to its name, launches freedom – in the form of colorful fireworks – at unwary opponents. These fireworks bounce off walls, so get creative with your shots to devastate enemies from around corners or from unexpected positions. These two new items are now available, alongside some limited-time Stars And Stripes outfits on sale now in the store for V-Bucks.
In addition, the delayed Playground Mode that was discussed in length in details from the last update, but was later delayed. This mode is the ultimate free-form building challenge, offering a group of up to 4 friends a full hour to build whatever they want in a world that is untouched by the storm up until the final 5 minutes of each match. During this hour, friendly fire is on, so feel free to blast your buddies out of the arena. But don’t worry – they will always respawn, so long as they aren’t killed by the storm.
Playground Mode also adds a 10x modifier onto collected resources. People have already used this vast supply of build power to create some incredible things, such as the famous loop from Sonic Green Hill Zone (Will update with link if I find the image, swear I saw it somewhere), massive pyramids and more.
If you’re going to hop onto playground mode, however, hop quickly. The mode will be gone forever on June 12th.
