Exclusive: UK regulator to push for probe into Amazon and Microsoft cloud dominance

According to two individuals who know the situation, the British media regulator Ofcom will press for an antitrust inquiry into Amazon’s (AMZN.O) and Microsoft’s (MSFT.O) hegemony in the UK’s cloud computing sector this week.

According to one of the individuals, the body’s final report, scheduled to be released Thursday, will keep the suggestion that Ofcom initially made in April.

Amazon and Microsoft collectively hold a market share of 60–70%. Google (GOOGL.O), the company they compete with the most, has about 10%.

Following an examination by Ofcom earlier this year, the watchdog declared that it had thought about referring the market to the CMA, the British competition authority, for investigation.

Ofcom issued a warning that the status of the British cloud computing industry made it challenging for certain customers to negotiate a favorable price with their supplier.

Requests for comment from Amazon, Microsoft, the CMA, and Ofcom were not immediately fulfilled.
