On Friday, state-owned news agency RIA reported that a Moscow court fined WhatsApp up to 4 million roubles (51,500) for failing to delete unlawful content.

WhatsApp’s parent company Meta Platforms Inc (META.O), was banned in Russia as an “extremist” organization last year. Still, the popular IM service has not faced legal action for failing to remove illegal content.

The RIA report did not say what WhatsApp failed to remove. Roskomnadzor filed the administrative case.

Russia implemented tough military censorship rules at the start of its military campaign in Ukraine, fining Google, Wikipedia, and Discord.
