Amazon is warning customers about frequent returns. According to The Information, Amazon is adding a warning label to “often returned” products to encourage shoppers to read product details and reviews before buying, preventing misrepresentation and unnecessary returns.
Amazon lets buyers return new, unused items up to 30 days after purchase, usually for free, unless the item is non-returnable. Yet, returning a product is still a burden and an unpleasant experience for buyers. Amazon’s platform has counterfeits and low-quality and falsely advertised products with bogus ratings. A conspicuous warning that such things are often returned deters consumers from buying them and may push shops, to be honest about their listings or improve on issues that cause increased product returns.
The Amazon-fulfilled Pro-Ject Automat A1 record player and two gowns spotted by The Information had the returns notice. Return notifications may require an Amazon login. These three items have a decent star rating. However, customer evaluations show they don’t fit or have come damaged.
Free returns take up warehouse space until they may be resold or disposed of. Online retailers reported a jump in returns during the COVID-19 pandemic, and returns continue above pre-pandemic levels, increasing vendor storage and disposal expenses. For a corporation that has let off 27,000 workers this year to cut costs, fewer returns mean less money spent on processing them.
Amazon representative Betsy Harden told The Information, “We’re presently presenting return rate information on some product detail pages to assist our consumers in making more educated buying decisions. Amazon’s new warning label follows a tag issued earlier this month that reveals a product’s approximate sales.
Amazon has not announced when or where the “often returned item” marking will be accessible outside the US.
