Amazon will create a massively multiplayer online (MMO) game based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s writings alongside Embracer Group, which owns “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” IP. “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings” will be featured in the open-world MMO set in Middle-earth.

Amazon Games Orange County, which developed New World, is developing the game. Amazon Games will publish the PC and console games worldwide. Amazon promises more specifics, including debut timing, later.

Amazon Studios creates “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” for Prime Video, although the game is unconnected.

“We’re committed to bringing players high-quality games, whether through original IPs or long-beloved ones like The Lord of the Rings,” said Amazon Games vice president Christoph Hartmann in a news release. Our team is honored and appreciative to Middle-earth Enterprises for entrusting us with this legendary universe. Following our Tomb Raider deal last year, we’re happy to expand our connection with Embracer Group, who are great collaborators.”

Amazon’s second Lord of the Rings MMO is coming. However, the company’s 2019 attempt was canceled in 2021. Amazon, Athlon Games, and Leyou produced the game. Amazon and Tencent, which acquired Leyou in 2020, disagreed, halting the initiative.

Amazon is expanding its video game approach and announcing the game. The video games division lost 100 workers earlier this year. Amazon’s San Diego gaming studio, Game Growth, and Prime Gaming were laid off.

Amazon Games’ MMO New World and action RPG Lost Ark are internally created. Additionally, the business is creating a multiplatform “Tomb Raider” game. Amazon Games has published numerous games since 2013; however, none have been hits. The business hopes to make a hit with a large fantasy franchise title.
