Apple (AAPL.O) lowered Vision Pro manufacturing goals due to design complexity, the Financial Times reported on Monday.
Last month’s Vision Pro, which will launch in the US early next year, costs $3,499.
Luxshare, Apple’s sole contract manufacturer, is projected to make fewer than 400,000 Vision Pros in 2024.
The FT said that Apple aimed to sell 1 million headsets in the first year. Apple and Luxshare declined to comment to Reuters.
FT said Apple ordered components from two Chinese suppliers for 130,000 to 150,000 units in the first year, postponing plans for a cheaper model.
FT’s main production hurdle is the device’s micro-OLED screens. Apple was dissatisfied with defect-free micro-OLED yield.
Apple and Luxshare ignored an email requesting problem details.
A Luxshare official told FT that the 2024 production projection drop “disappointed” the company, which plans to build 18 million gadgets annually.
