Chris Evans Still Insists He’s Not Returning to the MCU

Chris Evans has addressed rumors of returning as Captain America, firmly stating he is “happily retired” from the role. While fans speculate about a potential MCU comeback, Evans confirmed his departure is final, passing the torch to Anthony Mackie. “It was an honor, but it’s time to move forward,” he shared.

Chris Evans Addresses MCU Return Rumors: “Happily Retired”

Chris Evans, who famously brought Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, to life in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), has weighed in once again on persistent rumors about his return. In an interview with Esquire published on January 30, 2025, the actor dispelled speculation, stating bluntly, “That’s not true… I’ve just stopped responding to it.” While Marvel fans continue to hold onto hope for a surprise comeback, Evans made it clear that he is “happily retired” from the role that catapulted him to global stardom.

The rumors surrounding Evans’ potential return have been swirling ever since his character’s emotional farewell in Avengers: Endgame in 2019. In the film, Steve Rogers passes the iconic shield to Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson, signaling a new chapter for the Captain America mantle. Evans’ departure seemed final at the time, portraying an older, retired Steve Rogers reflecting on a life both well-lived and well-fought. Yet, his 2023 statement of “never say never” reignited speculation, with many fans theorizing about a possible return. However, his latest comments seem to close the door on Captain America for good.

Much of the renewed speculation stems from whispers surrounding Marvel’s 2026 blockbuster, Avengers: Doomsday. Directed by the Russo Brothers, who helmed Infinity War and Endgame, the upcoming film has already made big headlines by confirming the return of Robert Downey Jr. in a new role—Doctor Doom, albeit in a variant form within the multiverse. With Marvel’s penchant for shocking twists and surprise cameos, fans began wondering if Evans could also be drawn back into the expanding cinematic universe. For now, though, he seems resolute in his decision to leave the role in the past.

Adding context to these rumors, Anthony Mackie—who officially took over as Captain America—addressed the speculation in the same Esquire feature. Mackie, set to star in Captain America: Brave New World this February, shared that he reached out to Evans directly for clarity. “I asked him straight up, and he told me he’s happily retired,” Mackie said, emphasizing the camaraderie between the two actors. He also expressed his excitement about carrying forward the Captain America legacy, saying, “He [Evans] passed the torch to me, and I take that responsibility seriously.”

Part of the confusion fueling fans’ hopes comes from Evans’ playful, albeit non-Captain America, cameo in the 2024 film Deadpool & Wolverine. The brief moment featured him as the Human Torch, a nod to his earlier portrayal of Johnny Storm in the Fantastic Four films. While the tongue-in-cheek appearance delighted audiences, some interpreted this nostalgic gesture as a sign that Evans could make a more substantial return to a Marvel role. However, it seems this cameo was merely a fun Easter egg rather than an indication of a broader MCU comeback.

Marvel’s secrecy and its ever-expanding multiverse have also contributed to uncertainties about who may return. In recent weeks, Benedict Cumberbatch first denied, then confirmed, his involvement in Avengers: Doomsday. These mixed signals have left many fans wary of taking actors’ statements at face value. Marvel has cultivated a history of surprising its audience, but Evans’ comments appear definitive in this instance.

While Chris Evans seems firm in his decision, he expressed no bitterness or regret about his time in the MCU. “It was an honor of a lifetime, but it’s time to move forward,” Evans told Esquire. And move forward he has, becoming a versatile actor and producer since his departure from the MCU.

As Marvel continues to evolve, its ability to constantly reimagine its stories keeps fans eagerly engaged. Whether or not Steve Rogers ever makes another appearance, his legacy as Captain America remains deeply entrenched in the MCU’s history. With Anthony Mackie now at the helm, the shield—and the responsibility it carries—rests in capable hands. While the door for Evans’ return might appear ceremonially closed, fans can still celebrate the incredible chapters he helped write in Marvel’s cinematic saga. For Chris Evans, the time has come to put the shield down, but his contributions to Marvel will never be forgotten.
