As Beijing cracks down on deep fake technology, a man in China’s Gansu province has been arrested for allegedly utilizing ChatGPT to construct a fake tale about a train catastrophe.

Pingliang city’s local police bureau said on April 25 that the tale, which claimed the collision killed nine construction workers in the city in China’s northern Gansu, got more than 15,000 clicks after being uploaded on social media.

New regulations in China prohibit using deep fake technology to create, disseminate, or fabricate regulations, which went into force on January 10 to limit the application of generative AI tools to modify digital material.

According to the police statement, 25 profiles from the blog-style platform Baijiahao, controlled by China’s computer giant Baidu, reported the “accident” from various IP addresses.
According to the report, the suspect, Hong, was apprehended when authorities traced all the accounts and discovered his firm was fabricating fraudulent information.

Local authorities said that Hong modified news created by ChatGPT and posted it to the Baidu-owned site and that investigations were ongoing.
