iPhone 18 Pro and iPad mini Cost Less Than Apple’s iPhone Duo — But Are They Better?

Apple’s latest product launches have sparked a debate over whether buying two separate devices offers better value than investing in its first foldable phone, the iPhone Duo. Although the iPhone 18 Pro and new OLED iPad mini cost less when purchased together, the comparison goes beyond price.

In just seven weeks, Apple refreshed its lineup with eight products, including the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, iPhone Duo, HomePod mini 2, HomeView, OLED iPad mini, iMac M6 and MacBook Pro M6.

The expanded range gives consumers more options, but it also raises an important question: is Apple’s foldable phone worth the premium when two separate devices appear to offer more for less?

iPhone Duo vs iPhone 18 Pro and iPad mini: The Price Difference

The numbers initially make a strong case for buying the iPhone 18 Pro alongside the new iPad mini.

The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199, while the OLED iPad mini costs $699. Together, they come to $1,898, saving buyers $101 compared with the iPhone Duo’s $1,999 starting price.

The difference is similar in other markets. In the UK, the two-device combination costs £1,898 compared with £1,999 for the foldable. In Australia, the combined price is AU$3,198, undercutting the Duo’s AU$3,499 price by AU$301.

That means buyers can get two separate Apple devices for less than the cost of one foldable phone.

The iPhone 18 Pro also has several advantages over the Duo. It is thinner and lighter, offers better cameras and uses neither the foldable design nor Touch ID authentication. Meanwhile, the OLED iPad mini provides a larger screen for entertainment and can be configured with Nano-Texture display technology, similar to an option available for the iPhone Duo.

On paper, the combination looks like the more practical purchase. But the comparison overlooks what makes a foldable phone different.

The iPhone Duo’s Biggest Advantage Is Portability

The central distinction is that the iPhone 18 Pro and iPad mini are two separate devices, while the iPhone Duo combines phone and tablet experiences in one product.

Apple’s foldable offers an iPad-like display that can be carried in a pocket and opened whenever a larger screen is needed. Users can watch videos, read, browse or handle other tasks without having to carry a second device.

The iPad mini is compact by tablet standards, but its 8.5-inch screen is still not something most people can comfortably carry in a pocket. Taking it everywhere may require a bag, adding another consideration to the purchase decision.

This is where the iPhone Duo makes its case. Buyers are not simply paying for a larger display; they are paying for the convenience of having a phone and a tablet in one device.

The trade-off is similar to choosing a versatile vehicle instead of purchasing separate cars for different needs. The combined option may cost more, but its appeal lies in doing multiple jobs without requiring separate products.

Two Devices Can Still Offer Better Value

Despite the Duo’s portability advantage, the author remains unconvinced that its benefits justify the compromises.

The iPhone 18 Pro and iPad mini offer separate, dedicated experiences. Users can enjoy the Pro’s camera capabilities and familiar smartphone design while keeping the iPad mini available for movies, reading and other activities that benefit from a larger screen.

The foldable tries to combine those experiences, but doing so involves compromises. For some buyers, the convenience of a single device will outweigh those limitations. For others, a conventional smartphone paired with a small tablet will remain the better option.

The key is understanding that the two purchasing decisions are not directly interchangeable. Having an iPhone and an iPad mini at home or in a bag does not recreate the experience of opening a foldable phone wherever you happen to be.

Likewise, owning the iPhone Duo does not provide exactly the same experience as using two dedicated devices.

Who Should Buy the iPhone Duo?

The iPhone Duo is best suited to consumers who value portability and want a larger display available throughout the day without carrying a separate tablet.

People who frequently watch videos, read or multitask while travelling may appreciate its ability to switch between a conventional phone and a tablet-like screen.

However, buyers who prioritize camera performance, a thinner and lighter phone, or the flexibility of separate devices may be better served by the iPhone 18 Pro and iPad mini combination.

Price-conscious shoppers also have a compelling reason to consider the two-device package, particularly if they would use both products regularly.

Verdict: Price Isn’t the Whole Story

Buying the iPhone 18 Pro and OLED iPad mini together is cheaper than purchasing Apple’s iPhone Duo. At $1,898, the combination saves $101 in the US, £101 in the UK and AU$301 in Australia.

But the lower price does not automatically make it the better purchase.

The two-device package offers dedicated smartphone and tablet experiences, while the iPhone Duo provides the convenience of a tablet-sized display in a pocketable device. Each approach has advantages, and neither completely replicates the other.

For consumers who want the best value from two separate products, the iPhone 18 Pro and iPad mini make a persuasive case. For those who prioritize having a larger screen available wherever they go, the iPhone Duo may still justify its premium.

Ultimately, buyers should weigh the cost against how they intend to use their devices. The cheaper option may offer better value on paper, but convenience and portability could make the foldable worthwhile for the right person.
