It’s 2025, and somehow, I still had to buy a Micro USB to USB-C cable.
For years, we’ve been promised a universal standard—USB-C, the sleek, reversible, and high-speed connector that was supposed to end the clutter of proprietary chargers. Yet, here I am, still dealing with the bane of my existence: Micro USB.
The Never-Ending Micro USB Saga
It all started when my HP Sprocket portable photo printer needed a charge. I was excited to use it for journaling—until I unboxed it and saw that dreaded Micro USB port. This wasn’t a relic from the past; it was a second-edition 2018 model, released at a time when USB-C was already mainstream.
And it’s not just my printer. Micro USB still haunts modern gadgets, from cat nail grinders to stress wearables, streaming sticks, and bike lights. Even new products on the market still ship with this outdated port.

Why Are We Still Stuck With Micro USB?
Despite being a decade old, USB-C hasn’t completely replaced Micro USB—and the reasons are frustratingly simple:

Product Life Cycles: Some gadgets, like cars and airplanes, have long refresh cycles. It takes years (sometimes decades) for older models to phase out.

Inventory Backlog: Companies still have stockpiles of Micro USB devices in warehouses. Until those sell out, they have no reason to update.

Cost Savings: While USB-C isn’t significantly more expensive, some manufacturers stick with Micro USB to cut costs, especially in budget devices.
USB-C’s Bright Future (With a Few Caveats)
Thankfully, change is coming. The EU’s USB-C mandate, enforced in December 2024, requires all new electronics sold in Europe to support USB-C charging. This regulation applies to smartphones, tablets, cameras, headphones, and gaming devices—but not everything.
Devices like printers, drones, and some smart gadgets aren’t covered. Plus, companies can still use proprietary chargers as long as USB-C is an option (looking at you, Apple’s MagSafe).

Will We Ever Be Free From Micro USB?
Realistically, Micro USB will linger for a few more years. Older gadgets that still function well—like my Shure MV7 mic—mean people will occasionally need to buy Micro USB cables in 2025 and beyond.
That said, USB-C dominance is inevitable. Governments are pushing for it, tech giants are embracing it, and soon, the last remnants of Micro USB will finally fade into obsolescence.
Until then, I’ll hold onto my two Micro USB cables—and pray I never need to buy another one again.
