The Wall Street Journal reports that Elon Musk founded X.AI, an AI business. Musk is the company’s director, and Jared Birchall, Musk’s family office director, is its secretary. The registration, acquired by The Verge, shows Musk formed the corporation on March 9, 2023.
According to a Business Insider article, Musk bought thousands of GPUs to fuel a new generative AI product. Musk wanted to compete with OpenAI, according to the Financial Times. In addition, Musk allegedly sought startup capital from SpaceX and Tesla investors.
“It seems like everyone and their dog is buying GPUs at this point,” Musk said on Twitter Spaces when questioned about his GPU purchases.
The reported X.AI moniker fits his X Corp. identity for Twitter and the “X” label he’s given his “everything app.”
Musk, who co-founded OpenAI in 2015 but left in 2018, recently signed a letter calling for a halt to “giant AI experiments.”
OpenAI’s ChatGPT and GPT-4 technology have made it a household brand recently and helped launch Microsoft and Google’s current campaign to integrate AI technologies into many of their businesses.
