Canadian privacy regulators are conducting a combined inquiry into ChatGPT-parent OpenAI’s data gathering and use, becoming the latest major country to examine AI tool regulation.

On Thursday, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada said it would examine OpenAI’s ChatGPT collection, usage, and dissemination of citizens’ data.
Reuters requested comment from OpenAI.

The birth of the chatbot phenomenon ChatGPT has sparked AI competition among internet titans like Alphabet Inc. and Meta, leading governments to consider regulations to regulate the radically new technology.

ChatGPT responds to prompts with essays, humor, and poetry. In late November, OpenAI, a Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O)-backed private firm, released it for free.
Canada will investigate whether the corporation has met “its obligations with respect to openness and transparency, access, accuracy and accountability.”

“As this is an active investigation, no additional details are available,” the commissioner’s office said, adding that the probe’s conclusions would be published.
