Masayoshi Son, the chief executive officer of SoftBank (9984.T), stated that he believes artificial general intelligence (AGI), which refers to artificial intelligence that surpasses human intellect in practically all fields, would be realized within the next ten years.
When speaking at the SoftBank World Business conference, Son expressed his belief that artificial general intelligence (AGI) will be ten times more intelligent than the total of all human intelligence. He noticed the significant advancements in generative AI, which he claimed had already surpassed the level of human intellect in several areas.
“It is wrong to say that AI cannot be smarter than humans because it was created by humans,” he added. “It is wrong to say that AI cannot be smarter than humans.” “Artificial intelligence is now capable of learning on its own, training itself, and drawing its own conclusions, just like humans.”
Son has been discussing the potential of artificial general intelligence (AGI), generally referring to it as a “singularity,” to revolutionize business and society for several years, but this is the first time he has provided a timetable for creating this technology.
At the conference, he also presented the concept of “Artificial Super Intelligence,” which, according to him, would be realized in the next 20 years and would be much more intelligent than human intelligence by a factor of 10,000.
Son is well-known for making several astute wagers, some of which resulted in spectacularly unsuccessful bets, which contributed to the growth of SoftBank into a major player in the field of technology investing.
In addition, he is prone to making loud assertions regarding the revolutionary influence of newly developed technology. His forecasts about mobile internet have generally come true, while those about the Internet of Things have not.
Son urged Japanese businesses to “wake up” to the opportunities presented by artificial intelligence (AI), noting that they had steadily fallen behind in the internet age. He also reaffirmed his conviction that chip creator Arm is central to the “AI revolution.”
Rene Haas, CEO of Arm, gave a video address to the conference in which he praised the energy efficiency of the company’s designs and predicted that such designs would become increasingly in demand to fuel artificial intelligence.
Son has stated that he feels he is the only one who believes that AGI will become a reality within the next ten years. Haas expressed the belief that he would see it within his lifetime.
