Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE) is in talks with Tesla (TSLA.O) to adopt its North American Charging Standard (NACS), joining several automakers and charging equipment manufacturers.

In recent weeks, Ford (F.N.), General Motors (GM.N), and ChargePoint (CHPT.N) have joined Tesla’s charging design.

“Volkswagen Group and its brands are currently evaluating the implementation of the Tesla North American Charging Standard (NACS) for its North American customers,” claimed the German automaker.

Its E.V. charging network unit, Electrify America, has over 850 charging stations and 4,000 chargers in the U.S. and Canada. Volkswagen, which sold roughly 16,000 EVs in the U.S. in the first quarter, will continue to provide the CCS connector during the NACS transition. It sold 7,900 EVs last year.

Tesla has added CCS to U.S. charging stations as the Biden administration seeks billions in subsidies to expand charging networks.

The U.S. Department of Energy reports that 60% of fast chargers in the U.S. are Superchargers from the E.V. maker. Separately, Polestar has partnered with Tesla to offer its charging network to Swedish electric vehicle customers in the U.S. and Canada.
