On 5 September the United Nations General Assembly voted 164–1 to encourage governments, schools, media and digital tools to use the Equal Earth projection instead of the 16th-century Mercator map whenever the size of countries matters.
The United States was the only ‘no vote’. Togo sponsored the text; the African Union backed it.
The resolution does not ban Mercator. It does not order Google, Apple or logistics platforms to rebuild their products. That gap between a political win and a product change is the story for the tech industry.
What the vote actually does
Mercator was drawn for European sailors. It keeps compass bearings straight and inflates land near the poles. Greenland looks roughly as large as Africa.
Africa is about 14 times bigger. Equal Earth, published in 2018, keeps area honest and accepts warped shapes. Africa, Latin America and parts of Asia gain visual weight. Europe and North America shrink toward scale.
Maps are not neutral. They train the eye. For an Africa-led campaign, that is the point. The question for operators is whether that new picture reaches the apps people use to move.
Navigation will not flip overnight
Google Maps, Apple Maps, Waze and most in-car systems sit on a Web Mercator-style view because it keeps local geometry usable.
Streets look like streets. A left turn looks like a left turn. Equal Earth preserves area and distorts angles. Drop it into turn-by-turn guidance and cities near the poles stretch; junction views feel wrong.
French coverage of the vote already notes that Google has no immediate plan to change its default projection. A classroom can swap a wall poster in a day. A global navigation product cannot.

Delivery will feel even less
Bolt, Uber, Jumia Food, GIG Logistics and motorcycle last-mile fleets do not route off a UN poster. They use road graphs, GPS traces, live traffic and, where it exists, high-definition lane data. Distance is geodesic.
The painful last metres in Lagos or Port Harcourt are addressing, gates, one-way streets and power, not whether Greenland looks too big on a globe.
The same is true for warehouse-to-hub planning and autonomous-vehicle HD maps. Those layers are local, frequently updated and built for centimetres, not classroom fairness.
Map SDKs such as Mapbox, HERE and AMAP already support many projections. Equal Earth can be a default in a dashboard. It does not have to become the engine under a rider’s phone.
Where the stack will moveThe vote was written for places where size on the page is the product:
- School textbooks, exam boards and ministry dashboards
- News graphics and climate or aid slides
- ESG and investment decks that still treat visual weight as market weight
- GIS and business-intelligence tools that can change a default in a settings file
Those surfaces will shift first, especially inside African Union institutions and public education systems. Perception follows the picture. “Africa looks small” has always been a lazy slide. After this vote it also looks dated.
Why it matters in Nigeria
This was not a Silicon Valley story that Africa watched. It was an African diplomatic story that tech now has to interpret.
Symbolism is real. For decades the default world image shrank the continent. Equal Earth is a political correction even if no dispatch rider in Yaba ever sees it.
Operations will not break. Nigeria’s mapping problems are incomplete addresses, informal roads, okada routing and last-metre delivery, the same problems Mapbox has described as the final 10 metres of a failed drop, not a UN projection fight.
Education and government can move fast. TETFund digital centres, state education boards and federal dashboards do not need Google’s permission to adopt Equal Earth. That is the cheapest, most aligned response to the resolution.
Capital markets will notice the optics. Funds and development-finance institutions that still open Africa pitches with a Mercator world map will look behind the politics, even if their routing engines stay unchanged.
Bottom lineThe new map will change how the world is shown. It will not, in the near term, change how parcels move.
Expect school walls, newsrooms, AU graphics and some analytics defaults to switch. Expect consumer maps and delivery routing to stay on conformal projections for years, because those products optimise for “can I turn left here?” not “does Africa look fair?”
For you as Techeconomy reader, the useful split is this: treat the vote as a win on representation, classrooms and default settings.
Do not view it as a logistics upgrade. Jumia and Bolt do not need to rewrite their engines next week. Ministries, editors and anyone still putting Africa next to Greenland on a slide do.
