China’s cyberspace regulator summons Alibaba’s Quark and Netease CC over vulgar content

The Quark platform, owned by Alibaba (9988. HK), was fined 500,000 yuan ($68,342.42) by China’s internet authority on Monday for promoting and hosting offensive information.

The Cyberspace Administration of China stated that the agency also mandated that Netease’s (9999. HK) livestream platform, Netease CC, prohibit the transmission of specific dance videos for seven days due to vulgar content.

China’s state-backed Securities Times they claimed that Quark places a high priority on the issue and that pertinent illicit information has been removed from the site.

The Securities Times cited Quark as saying, “The company has established a special working group to upgrade the identification capabilities and processing speed of harmful information and has actively carried out special rectification actions.”

Undoubtedly, the measures implemented against Quark and NetEase CC by Alibaba will establish a standard for other digital firms doing business in China. It shows that authorities are watching out for the upkeep of a morally hygienic online space.

In conclusion, the accusation of obscene content by China’s Cyberspace Regulator against Quark and NetEase CC marks a turning point in the nation’s digital history.
