ChatGPT’s mobile app hit record $4.58M in revenue last month, but growth is slowing

There is both positive and negative information on ChatGPT’s mobile activities. On the bright side, the AI chatbot continues to witness an increase in the number of app installs and its income, with September establishing a new record on both fronts: 15.6 million downloads and approximately $4.6 million in gross revenue across all of its iOS and Android applications in countries all over the world.

Appfigures, a company specializing in market information, has just released statistics showing that revenue growth has slowed. Although it exceeded 30% throughout a couple of months — 31% in July and 39% in August — that figure has plummeted to 20% growth as of September.

This could be the first sign that ChatGPT is nearing saturation regarding the number of mobile users willing to pay for the upgraded ChatGPT+ subscription service. This relatively pricey in-app purchase costs $19.99 per month and provides users with faster response times, priority access during peak times, and early access to new features and improvements. ChatGPT on mobile brought in gross sales of $2.1 million in June, climbing to $2.74 million in July, then $3.81 million in August, and now, the all-time high of $4.58 million in September. The subscription has been selling well so far.

It may be a surprise to learn that ChatGPT is not the AI app with the most income; according to the statistics provided by Appfigures, a rival known as Ask AI is generating more money due to substantial advertising expenditure. Its revenue has increased from $6.48 million in May, which is when ChatGPT mobile was released, to a peak of $6.55 million in August.

September saw a modest decline, with the total falling to $5.51 million; nevertheless, this figure is still higher than ChatGPT’s. Ask AI has outgrown its competitors, such as Genie and AI Chat Smith, who have not yet reached their full potential.

Given the amount of money Ask AI spends on advertisements, the company’s net income could tell a different tale. After considering the percentages that Apple and Google received of the income from in-app purchases, ChatGPT made a profit of around $3.2 million in September.

According to estimations provided by Appfigures, ChatGPT not only set a new record for monthly income but also witnessed 52.2 million overall installations after recording 15.6 million in September. The App Store was responsible for 6.6 million downloads in September, while Google Play was responsible for 9 million. Google Play is driving the downloads.

However, it should not surprise that the App Store is the primary driver of income, accounting for $3 million of the total in-app transactions made during the previous month. The United States of America is ChatGPT’s most lucrative market, accounting for sixty percent of the company’s total income.
