China to provide consular assistance to Vivo employees arrested in India

Two Chinese workers of the smartphone manufacturer Vivo who were arrested by Indian authorities will get consular protection and help from China, according to a spokeswoman for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who stated on Monday that China encourages India to refrain from discriminating against Chinese enterprises.

Reuters was informed by a person closely connected with the investigation that the two individuals were produced before a court in Delhi on Saturday and then transferred to the custody of the Enforcement Directorate.

According to the source, who requested not to be named because they were not authorized to speak to the media, the Vivo employees would appear in court on Tuesday. Reuters was unable to confirm the Vivo employees’ identities before they appeared.

In a case involving suspected money laundering, which the company has disputed, the Enforcement Directorate detained four industry executives, including a Chinese national, working for Vivo’s Indian branch. The arrests happened two months after the Enforcement Directorate discovered the allegations.
