Cloudflare restored its services on Friday after a short outage. The disruption made it hard for users to access Coinbase and Claude AI, Anthropic’s chatbot. The outage lasted from 8:47 to 9:13 GMT and was caused by a firewall update. Cloudflare was fixing a newly found vulnerability in React Server Components.
Coinbase and Claude AI both said their services were back to normal. The React problem, first found on Wednesday, could have let harmful code run on some systems without being noticed.
At the peak of the outage, Downdetector recorded nearly 2,000 reports, dropping to about 120 by 11:10 GMT. The number of affected users may have been higher.
Cloudflare’s stock fell 4.5% in pre-market trading. This follows a major outage last month that affected X and ChatGPT. These incidents highlight the risks of relying on a few companies for web and security services. A backup plan is important.
Recent problems, like outages at Amazon Web Services and last year’s issues at CrowdStrike and Microsoft, have made people more worried about depending too much on one provider for important online services.
