On Tuesday, Twitter Inc. CEO Elon Musk announced upcoming service changes, such as adding voice calls and direct encrypted messages.

Musk announced “Twitter 2.0 The Everything App” ideas last year, saying it would have encrypted DMs, long-form tweets, and payments.

Musk tweeted on Tuesday that “coming soon” will be the ability to “voice and video chat from your handle to anyone on this platform,” allowing users to communicate with others worldwide without providing their phone numbers.

With the addition of calls, Twitter will be on par with other microblogging platforms like Facebook and Instagram, which are owned by Meta (META.O).

While Musk did not specify whether or not calls will be encrypted, he did announce on Twitter on Wednesday that an encrypted version of direct communications would be accessible.  In addition, this week, Twitter said it would begin purging dormant accounts by eliminating and archiving them.
