At Meta Connect 2022, the tech giant announced a three-year deal with NBCUniversal to bring Peacock to the Meta Quest VR headset. In addition, Meta Quest 2 and Pro devices now include the streaming app.
Peacock, available in the Meta Store, lets subscribers watch 90,000 hours of VR movies and TV episodes, including fan favorites like “The Office,” “Parks and Recreation,” and “Yellowstone” and Peacock originals like “Poker Face” and “Bel-Air.”
VR viewers may watch live MLB, Premier League, WWE, Big Ten Football, and NFL games.
Users may multitask by watching numerous screens on Meta Quest 2 and Pro. In addition, peacock subscribers may stream entertainment while using other applications or browsing the web.
Users will soon engage with the Dunder Mifflin group in VR. Meta Horizon Worlds and Meta Avatars Store will add NBCU IP later this year. DreamWorks, Universal Monsters, Halloween Horror Nights, Blumhouse, and more are coming to these immersive worlds from NBCU.
Peacock provides qualified customers with limited-time incentives. Peacock Premium is free for three months for Meta Quest 2 and Pro owners. After that, Meta Quest buyers get a free year of Peacock Premium.
The deals are available to 18-year-old residents of the US or its territories (Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, Northern Mariana Islands, and the US Virgin Islands). The offer expires on April 11, 2024.
“We’re excited to bring the Peacock App to Meta Quest 2 and Pro,” said Meta VP Immersive Apps and Experiences Jarred Kennedy. “Meta Quest 2 and Pro can turn any room into a virtual entertainment theater, and now users can access an even larger collection of fan-favorite movies, TV, and sports.”
Peacock thinks the promotion will attract more members as the streamer tries to compete with Netflix and HBO Max. The streaming service added five million paid users in the fourth quarter of 2022, reaching 20 million. As a result, the firm lost $978 million in adjusted EBITDA.
Peacock eliminated its new customer-free tier. As a result, Xfinity users no longer get free Peacock Premium. Peacock will release Q1 2023 financial results on April 27.
Meta is presumably banking on the alliance for higher income after three quarterly revenue reductions. Revenue dropped 4% year-over-year in the last earnings release. VR lost $3.67 billion in 2022. April 26 is Meta’s first-quarter report.
In January, eta increased its NBA partnership to offer 52 live VR games to Meta Quest headsets.
