The artificial intelligence (AI) chip startup Sapeon, funded by South Korea’s telecom-to-chip giant SK Group, unveiled its newest chip for data centers on Thursday. With this launch, Sapeon joins the global race to build AI chips alongside larger competitors such as Nvidia (NVDA.O).
Compared to products introduced by rivals this year, the newly developed Sapeon X330 chip “represents roughly twice the computational performance and 1.3 times better power efficiency,” according to a statement from the company. The report did not elaborate more on the competition.
According to Sapeon, the product will be ready for mass production in the first half of the year, and it will support large language models (LLMs), a sort of artificial intelligence software used to construct services like ChatGPT.
Data centers, which handle enormous amounts of data processing, are the intended use for the artificial intelligence semiconductors created by Sapeon. According to Sampson, the most prosperous contract chipmaker in the world, TSMC (2330. TW), is responsible for producing the X330 chip.
Sapeon is a subsidiary of SK Telecom (017670. KS), the leading telecommunications provider in South Korea. One of the most critical shareholders in Sapeon is its subsidiary, SK Hynix (000660. KS), the world’s number two memory chip manufacturer.
