TikTok, the popular short-form video platform, has taken a significant step towards improving user security and convenience by introducing support for passkeys. This new login method offers users a more secure alternative to traditional passwords and simplifies the authentication process.

To address concerns regarding the security of biometric data, TikTok’s passkey implementation follows Apple’s best practices. TikTok and other apps are unable to access any of the biometric authentication data that passkeys use on users' devices. Additionally, passkeys on iOS and Mac devices sync with iCloud Keychain, adding an extra layer of security and simplifying the login process across multiple devices. In case of device loss, the passkeys can be retrieved through the iCloud Keychain, ensuring users don’t lose access to their TikTok accounts.
What are Passkeys?
The FIDO Alliance and the World Wide Web Consortium created passkeys as an industry-standard authentication method. They allow users to sign in to apps and websites using their device’s built-in authentication methods, such as fingerprint recognition, facial recognition, or a screen lock PIN. Passkeys are not only easier to use but also provide enhanced security by eliminating the need for traditional passwords.Enhanced Security against Phishing Attacks
One of the key advantages of passkeys is their resistance to online attacks like phishing. Unlike passwords that can be easily stolen or guessed, passkeys rely on the user’s unique biometric data or device PIN. This makes passkey logins much more secure and reduces the risk of unauthorized access to TikTok accounts.Apple Integration and Cross-Platform Compatibility
TikTok’s passkey integration leverages Apple’s native passkey implementation on iOS devices. With the launch of iOS 16, Apple introduced passkeys as an alternative login method, making them available on iPhones, iPads (iOS 16.1 and later), and macOS Ventura. This cross-platform compatibility ensures that TikTok passkeys work seamlessly across Apple devices and any other devices that support this industry-standard authentication method.Protecting Biometric Data and iCloud Keychain Sync
