TikTok Launches Nearby Feed to Highlight Local Content in Europe

TikTok is expanding its discovery experience with the introduction of a Nearby Feed, a new feature designed to surface hyperlocal content and help users explore what’s happening around them. The update, now rolling out in the U.K., France, Italy and Germany, aims to make it easier for people to find local restaurants, attractions, events and services without leaving the app. The feature represents one of TikTok’s most direct moves into location-based recommendations, giving users a more immersive way to connect with their surrounding communities.

The Nearby Feed was initially tested in select Southeast Asian markets in 2022, but the latest rollout brings a more polished and integrated version to European users. Content displayed in this feed is curated based on a blend of factors, including the user’s general location, the subject of each video and the timing of the post. This approach ensures that users receive posts relevant to local food spots, cultural events, travel inspiration and nearby businesses aligned with their interests and engagement patterns. For creators, this update offers increased visibility for videos tagged with specific locations or services, allowing them to reach people living in or visiting the same area.

TikTok emphasizes that location sharing is optional and restricted to users aged 18 and over. When enabled, the app can use GPS-based information to refine recommendations. iOS users will see a visible indicator when their location is accessed, maintaining transparency. The company notes that its location data practices continue to comply with regional regulations. Content created by minors, users with private accounts or posts set to Friends or Only You will not be included in the Nearby Feed.

Users can manually change their displayed location if they wish to explore content from another area, making the feature helpful for trip planning or research. TikTok highlights the economic value of this tool, saying local businesses, cultural centers and creators can benefit from increased visibility and real-world engagement. According to the company, nearly half of TikTok users in the U.K. have visited a local shop, restaurant or attraction after seeing it on the platform, underscoring the app’s influence on offline behavior.

The Nearby Feed can be accessed directly from the home screen, with the tab labeled according to the user’s current location. TikTok has not yet announced whether the feature will expand to additional regions in the future.
