On Thursday, an EU official said Twitter may withdraw from a voluntary EU code of practice to combat disinformation, but it will not leave Europe.

Last year, the European Commission strengthened the regulation, forcing corporations to provide progress reports with statistics on how much advertising money they had avoided from disinformation actors.

New requirements include reporting political ad acceptance and manipulation.

The EU official claimed Twitter had shown symptoms of leaving the code, but it doesn’t matter because the firm hasn’t been trying hard lately.

They won’t attend meetings or provide reports. “They would still have legal obligations,” the official said, alluding to recent major tech rules tied to the code of practice.
“They are not pulling out of Europe,” the official claimed.

Twitter didn’t comment right away. Tech rule violations can result in 6% global turnover fines. Google, Meta Platforms, Microsoft, and TikTok signed the code.
