UK antitrust regulator to take on Big Tech with new legal power. The King’s Speech, which outlines the government’s goals, states that the antitrust regulator in Britain would be given the legal authority to customize regulations for large internet giants like Meta, Alphabet, and Amazon to ensure they treat businesses and customers equally.

More than two years ago, the Competition and Areas Authority (CMA) established a unique Digital Markets Unit to investigate quickly changing areas such as social media.

The unit will have the “teeth” to support its mandate from the proposed “Digital Markets, Competition, and Consumers” law, whose powers were initially planned to go into effect in 2022. According to the government, a few large IT businesses must abide by the regulations due to their designated status.

Under the proposed measure unveiled on Tuesday, they may face fines of 10% of their worldwide turnover for infractions.

Big Tech businesses must invest significantly in compliance teams and procedures to avoid trouble with the new legislation. Their operating costs will probably go up dramatically as a result of this.

Big Tech corporations are discouraged from engaging in anti-competitive conduct by the possibility of facing significant fines and penalties. They must make sure that their business practices adhere to the new rules.

Big-tech businesses may need to reevaluate their business strategy and the degree of their market dominance in light of the potential for asset divestment.

Smaller tech businesses may find it simpler to enter the market due to the regulator’s active promotion of fair competition, which might result in a more competitive and varied tech sector.

The UK Antitrust Regulator’s adoption of these additional legislative authorities will have a significant impact on consumers and the digital market overall, in addition to big tech corporations. This action shows a dedication to preserving a competitive environment and making sure that the influence of tech giants is restrained.

The new legal authority granted to the UK Antitrust Regulator signifies a dramatic change in the big tech regulatory environment. These regulations safeguard consumer interests, level the playing field, and encourage fair competition. These restrictions will likely have an impact on the UK tech sector as well as the global tech sector, establishing a precedent for tackling big tech corporations’ increasing power.
