While it may be too soon to begin decking-the-halls, it’s never too early to start making a list (and checking it twice) of the video games that will be released during the holiday season. Although there are plenty of titles to chose from, here is a list of six of the most highly-anticipated games being released between the months of September and December.

  1. Assassin’s Creed Origins

The last Assassin’s Creed video game was created back in 2015, and after a year long hiatus, Ubisoft is returning to the Assassin’s Creed franchise with Assassin’s Creed Origins. For the latest installment in the series, Ubisoft has introduced a completely new combat system and a brand new environment. Assassin’s Creed Origins takes place in Ancient Egypt and acts as a prequel to the games that came before it, revealing how the assassins first began.

It maintains the same historical influence Assassin’s Creed is known for, while still being an innovative, new adventure. There is also the new eagle vision feature, which allows you to check out an area through the eyes of an eagle before you travel there. While some of the Assassin’s Creed games have been a bit of a letdown, many fans are hoping this new game will be the kick start this franchise needs to bring it back to life. Assassin’s Creed Origins will be available for Playstation 4, Xbox One, and PC on October 27th.

2. Super Mario Odyssey

The last truly new Super Mario game was created about seven years ago when Super Mario Galaxy 2 was released for Wii. At Gamescom 2017, a video game convention that showcases the most critically acclaimed video games of the year, Super Mario Odyssey won five awards, including Best of Gamescom, making it one of the most highly-anticipated games of the year.

In Super Mario Odyssey, Mario will chase Bowser around the world, traveling to many strange and colorful locations using his ship, the Odyssey. Another added feature fans are excited about is Mario’s red hat, Kappe, which can now be used to control and attack his enemies. You can find more details about the game in this other article. Super Mario Odyssey will be available on October 27th for Switch.

3. Star Wars: Battlefront 2

While the first Battlefront game was not as popular, Star Wars: Battlefront 2 is gathering more interest amongst fans. Battlefront, which was released back in 2015, was criticized for not having enough content. Unlike its predecessor, Battlefront 2 will include content from all three movie trilogies, meshing together characters from different eras in the series. It’s the first Star Wars video game of its kind to feature characters such as Rey, Darth Maul, and Yoda all in one game, and it will be the first time Yoda is featured in a space battle in the Star Fighters Assault mode.

Gamers will be exploring the world of Star Wars through the Empire commander Iden Versio, who embarks on a mission of revenge after seeing the second Death Star explode. It will also include a single-player mode and a feature that will allow players to control Kylo Ren or Luke Skywalker. Star Wars: Battlefront 2 will be released on November 17th for Xbox One, PC, and Playstation 4.

4. Middle-earth: Shadow of War

Warner Bros. and Monolith are bringing back Tolkien’s iconic series in this open-world sequel to Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor. Middle-earth: Shadow of War begins where the last game ended, showing Talion set out to forge a new Ring of Power and battle Sauron’s armies.

Following its predecessor, Shadow of War will also expand on the Nemesis System, which gives gamers the power to control Followers, but this time, the Followers will act differently depending on their encounter with the player. Middle-earth: Shadow of War will be available on October 10th for Playstation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

5. Call of Duty: WWII

Instead of continuing with the storylines that move further into the future, Sledgehammer Games has decided to go back in time for the new video game Call of Duty: WWII. Gamers will battle as a soldier in World War II, specifically in Europe during 1944-45; the game will also feature some of the other prominent events during the war as well.

This jump back in time also means an end to jet-packs and a return to boots-on-the-ground multiplayer. While the game still strives for historical accuracy, the Nazi Zombies mode will still be available. Call of Duty: WWII is released on November 3rd for PC, Playstation 4, and Xbox One.

6. FIFA 18

It makes sense that the world’s number one sport would also have a number one game to match. FIFA 18, the most popular sports game in the world, will be released for PC, Playstation 4, Xbox One, and Switch on September 29th. FIFA 18 will begin where FIFA 17 ended for the story mode featuring Alex Hunter.

To improve gameplay, EA Sports has altered the offline A.I. in order to have the teams be more distinguished from one another. Some new features include the Frostbite 3 game engine, a few new stadiums, and the FIFA Ultimate Team.
