Microsoft Announces Xbox One X, “The Most Powerful Console Ever Made”

The Xbox One X, formerly called Project Scorpio, has made its official debut during Microsoft’s E3 press conference on June 11 at 2pm PST.

“When the renegade group of gamers, creators and engineers came together to form the original Xbox team and deliver the first Xbox console, we were driven by three principles,” said Phil Spencer, the president of Xbox. “Empower developers, delight gamers and deliver true hardware and technical innovation. The original Xbox team lived by the mantra: ‘There’s is no power greater than X.'”

Dubbed “the most powerful console ever made,” the Xbox One X’s main focus is the fact that it has 4K Ultra HD to enhance the player’s gaming experience. Here is a list of the brand new console’s full spec list, available at the official Xbox One X website and discussed at Xbox’s E3 press conference:

  • 8-core Custom AMD CPU clocked at 2.3GHz
  • 8GB of flash memory
  • 1 TB of HDD Internal Storage
  • 12GB of GDDR5 graphic memory
  • 6 teraflop GPU clocked at 1.172 GHz
  • 326 GB/sec memory bandwidth
  • 4K UHD Blu-ray playback
  • 8+ million pixels
  • Wide color gamut
  • HDMI 2.0b (out), 2160p @ 60Hz, AMD FreeSync
  • HDR10 support
  • DTS 5.1
  • Premium DOLBY Atmos sound
  • PCM 2.0, 5.1, 7.1
  • Bluetooth enabled
  • Dual band wireless with Wi-Fi, direct for home networks
  • IR Blaster
  • liquid-coooled Vapor Chamber and a centrifugal fan

“From the beginning, our focus on game creators and you, the gamer, gave us three big goals we needed to hit,” said Kareem Choudhry, the head of Xbox software engineering. “Power, compatibility, and craftsmanship.”

Not only is this claimed to be “the most powerful console ever made,” but it’s also the smallest Xbox console ever created. Also, all Xbox One accessories (i.e. controllers) and games can also be played on the Xbox One X. You don’t need to replace your 1080p TV, either — the Xbox One X will use its 4K capabilities to improve the quality through supersampling.

The reason why the Xbox One X was referred to as Project Scorpio is due to its Scorpio engine processor. “We use 16 nanometer technology to build a 360 square millimeter chip with seven billion transistors and 384 bit wide memory bus,” said Choudhry. “This is the fastest, most advanced processor to ever power a console.”

Xbox One X was teased at last year’s E3 2016 for release Holiday 2017. Project Scorpio was announced to have no exclusives during E3 2016, according to Eurogamer.net. This made fans and industry members alike curious as to what this new console had to offer for the Xbox brand.

“Project Scorpio will be the next addition to the Xbox family,” said Phil Spencer at last year’s Microsoft E3 press conference, “and it is ultimately the next step in delivering our vision for the future of gaming beyond generations. When it ships next year, we believe it will be the most powerful console ever built.”

Microsoft also introduced the Xbox One S at E3 2016, a slimmer version of the Xbox One that introduced some of the new Xbox One X features, including 4K and HDR10.

The Xbox One X seems to be direct competition to the PlayStation 4 Pro (also referred to with an interesting name, Neo), which was released last year’s holiday season. The PlayStation 4 Pro has 4.2 teraflops, while the Xbox One X has 6 teraflops. The PlayStation 4 Pro is compatible with its VR component, PlayStation VR.

The Xbox One X will be available on November 7 of this year and will cost $499.
