Nintendo, after the success of the NES Classic Edition, revealed that they will be remaking the Super NES. The remake of the old console will have 21 games installed, including Super Mario World and The Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past.
The console, like the NES Classic Edition, will be smaller and come with two Super NES Classic Controllers.
The 21 games that will be available on the Super NES Classic Edition, which were found on the Super NES Classic Edition official website are Super Mario World, Super Mario Kart, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, F-ZERO, Super Metroid, Street Fighter II Turbo, Super Punch-Out!!, Super Castlevania IV, Donkey King Country, Mega Man X, Kirby Super Star, Final Fantasy III, Kirby’s Dream Course, Star Fox, Star Fox 2, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, Contra III: The Alien Wars, Secret of Mana, Earthbound, and Super Ghouls n’ Ghosts.
It’s predecessor, the NES Classic Edition, was known to be extremely difficult to find and sold over 2.3 million units in its lifetime, according to TIME. Also, the NES Classic Edition was only available from November of 2016 to April of 2017, giving players a limited time to find the console remake.
Kotaku got a response from Nintendo after asking if they were going to ship more Super NES Classic Editions than they did NES Classic Editions. Here is what Nintendo had to say about the shipments for Super NES Classic Edition:
“We aren’t providing specific numbers, but we will produce significantly more units of Super NES Classic Edition than we did of NES Classic Edition. Super Nintendo Entertainment System: Super NES Classic Edition is currently planned to ship from Sept. 29 until the end of the calendar year 2017. At this time, we have nothing to announce regarding any possible shipments beyond this year,” said Nintendo. “…We are offering Super Nintendo Entertainment System: Super NES Classic Edition in special recognition of the fans who show tremendous interest our classic content.”
The original Super NES was originally released in 1991 in North America (previously released in Japan in 1990 followed by Europe and Australia who didn’t get the console until 1992). Over the course of its lifetime (1990-2003 in Japan, 1991-1999 in North America) it managed to sell over 49.1 million units and is one of the best-selling video game consoles of all time, according to Business 2 Community.
Some of the Super NES’ best selling games are included in the Super NES Classic Edition. These are Super Mario World (which sold over 20.6 million units), Donkey Kong Country (which sold over 9.3 million units), Super Mario Kart (which sold over 8.7 million units), The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (which sold over 4.6 million units), Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island (which sold over 4.1 million units), and Street Fighter II Turbo (which sold over 4.1 million units).
These games are in the top 10 best selling Super NES games, according to VGChartz. Some of the other games that will be included in the Super NES Classic Edition reside in the top 20.
Nintendo is seemingly pulling in older fans with these older console remakes. It even got to the point where people were hacking the NES Classic Edition in order to add more games to its catalogue, according to DigitalTrends. There wasn’t much Nintendo did to stop the hackers, so players could continue to expand their game library without getting into too much trouble.
The Super NES Classic Edition was also rumored to be released since December of last year, also according to DigitalTrends.
It will be released on September 29 of this year and cost $79.99. Information on what retailers will sell the game will be coming soon.
