According to an analysis done by Similarweb, OpenAI’s ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence chatbot that was released in November and quickly gained widespread popularity, suffered a decrease in the number of monthly website visitors for the third month in a row in August, but there are hints that the slide is coming to an end.
The number of people who accessed the ChatGPT website using a desktop computer or a mobile device fell by 3.2%, reaching 1.43 billion, in the month of August. This followed declines of about 10% in each of the two prior months. Since March, the average length of time that visitors spend on the website has been steadily decreasing month by month, going from 8.7 minutes in March to 7 minutes in August. This trend is expected to continue.
However, the number of unique visitors from throughout the globe increased to 180.5 million in August, up from 180 million in July.
The beginning of the new school year in September is likely to be beneficial for ChatGPT’s traffic and use, and several schools have already started to adopt it. The return of students to U.S. classrooms in August coincided with a modest increase in the volume of traffic on ChatGPT in the United States.
“Students seeking homework help appears to be part of the story: the percentage of younger users of the website dropped over the summer and is now starting to bounce back,” said David F. Carr of Similarweb, who monitors ChatGPT and its rivals on a daily basis. “The percentage of younger users of the website dropped over the summer and is now starting to bounce back.”
ChatGPT achieved 100 million monthly active users in January, only two months after it was first released, sparking a frenzy in the application of generative AI in day-to-day activities ranging from editing to scripting. Generative artificial intelligence technology makes use of previously collected data in order to produce new material, such as articles or poetry.
Before the debut of Meta’s Threads, it was the consumer application that was expanding at the quickest rate ever, and it is currently one of the top 30 websites in the whole globe.
This year has seen the introduction of a number of services that compete with ChatGPT, one of which is Bard, a chatbot developed by Google (GOOGL.O). Bing, the search engine owned and operated by Microsoft, now offers users a free chatbot that is powered by OpenAI.
In the month of May, OpenAI also introduced the ChatGPT app for Apple’s iOS operating system, which may take away some traffic from the company’s website. The basic version of ChatGPT may be used without charge, however the premium version costs $20 per month to subscribe to.
In addition to ChatGPT, OpenAI generates revenue by the direct sale of access to the business’s AI models to corporations and developers, as well as through a relationship with Microsoft, which resulted in an investment of over $10 billion into the company.
