After parliament enacted the Online Safety Bill, Britain encouraged Meta (META.O) not to launch end-to-end encryption on Instagram and Facebook Messenger without child sexual abuse protections.

Meta encrypts WhatsApp communications and aims to encrypt Messenger and Instagram direct messages end-to-end to improve security.
Suella Braverman, Britain’s Home Secretary, advocated robust online encryption but not at the expense of children’s safety.

“Meta has failed to provide assurances that they will keep their platforms safe from sickening abusers,” she claimed. “They must create safeguards to accompany their end-to-end encryption plans.”

A Meta representative said: “Most Brits use encrypted apps to protect themselves from hackers, scammers, and thieves.

“We don’t think individuals want us reading their private conversations. Therefore, we’ve spent five years establishing sophisticated safety measures to prevent, detect, and battle misuse while keeping online security.

On Wednesday, it would update on its actions, such as banning adults over 19 from messaging teens who don’t follow them and using technology to identify and stop bad behavior.

“As we roll out end-to-end encryption, we expect to continue providing more reports to law enforcement than our peers due to our industry-leading work on keeping people safe,” they told me.

Social media platforms must do more to protect minors from hazardous content under the Online Safety Bill enacted by Parliament on Tuesday.

The new law pits companies against the government over end-to-end encryption.

A measure that could force WhatsApp-led messaging platforms to compromise end-to-end encryption is opposed.

The government claims that the bill does not restrict the technology but demands firms to stop child abuse and develop encryption scanning technologies as a last resort.

Tech companies say end-to-end encryption and message scanning are incompatible.
