Amazon is giving its voice assistant a major upgrade—and this time, Alexa has a lot more to say.
The new version, Alexa+, introduces advanced AI capabilities designed to make conversations feel more natural, responsive, and even proactive. Rolling out across the UK, the update aims to transform Alexa from a simple command-based assistant into a more conversational companion.
Since its launch in 2016, Alexa—best known through Amazon’s Echo devices—has faced growing criticism for falling behind newer AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude, which offer more fluid and human-like interactions.
Alexa+ is Amazon’s answer to that gap.
Instead of giving short, factual replies, the upgraded assistant can now follow conversational threads and respond in a more relaxed, human tone. For example, rather than simply stating “no rain is expected,” Alexa+ might say, “You can leave the umbrella at home—sunny skies ahead.”
Industry experts say the shift could divide users. While some may enjoy the more engaging experience, others might find it unnecessary or even unsettling. Still, the change marks a clear evolution in how smart assistants interact with users.
Despite criticism, Alexa remains widely used. Amazon says more than half of UK consumers have tried Echo devices, with over 114 billion interactions recorded since 2023—highlighting just how embedded the assistant has become in everyday life.
At the same time, competition is heating up. Google is reworking its smart home ecosystem around its Gemini AI, signaling a broader industry shift toward more intelligent, conversational systems.
Alexa+ will be available as a £19.99 monthly subscription or included with an Amazon Prime membership. Newer Echo devices will support it immediately, while older users can opt in through an online sign-up.
For Amazon, the stakes are high. The Echo line has reportedly generated massive losses over the years, with many users treating devices more like basic tools than shopping assistants. By making Alexa smarter and more conversational, the company may not only boost engagement but also gather more detailed user insights—potentially strengthening its advertising business.
Whether users embrace the more talkative Alexa remains to be seen—but one thing is clear: the era of quiet, command-only assistants is coming to an end.
