Marvel and 20th Century Fox are teaming up to develop a new project and this time it isn’t a movie or a TV show, it’s a new RPG game featuring the heroes and villains from the Marvel universe. The two companies currently own Aftershock game studio and are developing a new RPG that could possibly meld the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the Fox Marvel Universe together.
Fox acquired Aftershock through its FoxNext Games division and currently they are operating under it as a sub-department, the company was originally part of the interactive entertainment company Kabam, and was bought for $800 million, the company has history developing video games and even has experience developing a Marvel title, the company known or developing The Hobbit: Kingdoms of Middle-earth and Marvel Contest of Champions, and are currently working on an Avatar mobile game set to release before James Cameron’s sequel to the film releases in theaters.
Marvel first announced this exciting news through a press statement made by Marvel’s Senior VP of Games and Innovation, Jay Ong, as he stated, “Aftershock is creating something special and we are thrilled to finally announce this news. The game will be the full package: an exciting storyline, epic moments with Marvel superheroes and super villains, and incredible visuals that truly bring our characters to life. It’s shaping up to be one of our biggest and boldest projects in our mobile portfolio, and we know it will exceed our fans’ expectations.” The president of Studios Aaron Loeb also stated that teaming up with Marvel on their first game at FoxNext Game was a “dream partnership” and that the game will have an amazing design, stunning graphics, and a captivating story. Marvel Games did state earlier that they would be starting to build video games with connecting storylines similar to MCU.
DC has done a similar gaming project that has since proved to be big success, the name of the game is DC Universe Online where players are able to create their own superhero and explore the world of DC and save the world from evil. Whether or not marvel’s game will mirror DC’s is unknown. The game itself will be separate from Fox and Marvel’s two cinematic universes, though there has been some talk of the two eventually joining in the future but as of now nothing is confirmed with the two companies busy working on other projects such as, Fox’s Dr. Doom film, X-Men: Dark Phoenix, and Deadpool 2 and Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War, it’s untitled sequel, and Captain Marvel’s own MCU movie. But whatever game the two companies decide to release they have assured fans that it will be one that will be pleasing and memorable to Marvel fans both old and new. Happy gaming!
