On Wednesday, a Mexican government official announced that the billionaire Elon Musk-owned satellite internet service provider Starlink had received a 1.56 billion peso ($89.80 million) contract to offer free internet access throughout Mexico until the year 2026.

At a routine government-hosted morning news conference, Carlos Emiliano Calderon, the head of Mexico’s digital strategy, claimed that Musk’s company won the contract because it responded to the public tender offer with the best prices.

According to Calderon, contracts for free internet access in Mexico have been signed with nine firms, including Starlink.

According to documents Reuters reviewed, Starlink is also scheduled to supply infrastructure for Mexico’s state energy business through the end of 2026.

The amount of the deal to do business with Mexico’s Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) ranges from 887.5 million to 1.8 billion pesos.

This strategic partnership signifies more than just a business deal; it embodies a commitment to empowering communities through connectivity. By granting free internet access, Starlink aims to catalyze economic growth, enhance educational resources, and enable telemedicine facilities in areas that have long grappled with isolation due to a lack of reliable internet services.

The introduction of Starlink’s satellite internet system brings many benefits and transforms Mexico’s competitive internet access environment. These advantages are as follows:

1. Extent and Accessibility Across the Globe The satellite constellation that Starlink uses assures that the company has a worldwide presence, overcoming geographical restrictions and penetrating even the most inaccessible areas.
2. High-Speed Connectivity: Starlink delivers uninterrupted internet connectivity at speeds comparable to typical broadband services. This enables users to access online resources without being subject to any restrictions.
3. Reliability and Low Latency Through the utilization of cutting-edge satellite technology, Starlink can the impact of latency concerns and provide users with an internet experience that is on par with that ofrial networks.
