The creators of the popular modding tool Open IV for the PC version of GTA V have announced that they will be shutting down their services due to receiving a cease and desist order from Take-Two Interactive, the game company who publishes products such as Rockstar games and 2k. The order came after 10 years of the mod being used and the Grand Theft Auto V PC gaming community was not happy upon receiving the new.
Open IV is a popular modding tool used on the PC version of the popular game series Grand Theft Auto that allows gamers to add hundreds of mods such as changing the character to any popular character or real life figure they choose, adding new cars, weapons, and abilities not available in the game, some even use it to make video and discover new areas in the game. However, the fact that Open IV allows gamers to do all of these features not intended by Take-Two Interactive is exactly why there are demanding the modding tool be shut down, Open IV’s claims that the modding tool allows third parties to hack their way through the security features in the game and violate the user’s and license agreement in the game.
The creators of the modding tool have since decided not to fight back against these the order as they feel it would be a waste of their time and effort as well as feeling that though they could prove that modding is legally fair use, there is no guarantee that they will receive the freedom to use their modding tool back. Rockstar Games, the label behind GTA V had this to say in response to Take-Interactive’s actions, “Take-Two’s actions were not specifically targeting single player mods. Unfortunately, OpenIV enables recent malicious mods that allow harassment of players and interfere with the GTA Online experience for everybody. We are working to figure out how we can continue to support the creative community without negatively impacting our players.” Fans of the modding tool have responded to it’s loss with mixed emotions and comment that though there are other single player mods available there are non that can be compared to that of Open World IV, some fans actually became angry swore to never purchase another video game from Take-Two Interactive. The popular modding tool has allowed PC gamers to play GTA V in ways no one would have ever thought possible and will surely be missed.
