Porsche and Mobileye, Intel’s autonomous driving branch that spun into a public business last year, said Tuesday that future sports vehicles would have hands-free automatic assistance and navigation.

Mobileye’s SuperVision technology platform will power Porsche’s future ADAS systems. Mobileye says SuperVision lets automobiles follow navigation routes, change lanes, and pass slower vehicles on multi-lane roadways. In addition, the business claims its technology lets drivers take their hands off the steering wheel on certain highways as long as they’re visually aware. Cameras and radar help SuperVision see the world.

Porsche’s parent company, Volkswagen and Ford, removed their stakes in autonomous car technology firm Argo AI, shutting it down. According to SAE, Argo developed Level 4 autonomous vehicle technology to manage all driving elements in certain scenarios without human involvement.

In many places, the firm had partnered with Lyft to offer public robotaxi services. The services weren’t charging passengers yet, and the roboticist’s journey to market was getting longer and murkier. ADAS profitability was prioritized above moonshot initiatives like complete autonomy by Ford and VW.

Volkswagen reportedly extended its Mobileye partnership after ending its Argo AI partnership. VW’s software business Cariad worked with Mobileye to create autonomous driving technology. Bosch, Qualcomm, and Horizon Robotics are all partnering with Cariad.

Mobileye is a significant automated driving function supplier. “This technology will help us forge ahead with our modern, sporty luxury strategy,” said Porsche executive board chairman Oliver Blume. “We’re combining a great product with a personal experience.” Our client’s needs matter to us. So we aim to exceed expectations again and again.”

Porsche’s upcoming models will use Mobileye’s ADAS. In addition, Mobileye’s experts will create specialized driver attention monitoring solutions.

Michael Steiner, Porsche’s R&D board member and VW Group’s head of development, said, “In most situations, drivers will continue to want to drive a Porsche themselves in the future – and will be able to do so at any time.” We are interested in several elements of partially autonomous driving. Intelligent technologies like Mobileye SuperVision technology may help drivers in common scenarios like traffic congestion.

Porsche did not disclose when or which models will include SuperVision or Mobileye’s technology. However, the business said other VW Group brands might use SuperVision as a platform solution.
