Wearable ‘Ai Pin’ launched by Humane, backed by ex-Apple execs and Microsoft

A star-studded roster of co-founders and executives includes Humane, a Silicon Valley firm. On Thursday, the company unveiled a $699 gadget that promises to put state-of-the-art artificial intelligence in your pocket.

The Ai Pin is a device that uses the ChatGPT maker OpenAI’s technology and Microsoft’s (MSFT.O) cloud computing resources to allow users to speak with virtual assistants while wearing it on their clothing and possibly even touching it. Using laser projection technology, it projects text and monochrome pictures onto the user’s hand.

Humane is one of several Silicon Valley startups hoping to uncover the next big thing in consumer electronics. Former employees of Apple (AAPL.O.) who worked on the iPhone founded it. During a display of the Ai Pin earlier this year, Humane co-founder and President Imran Chaudhri declared that “the future is not on your face.” However, the firm has categorically rejected the mixed-reality headsets that businesses like Apple and Meta Platforms (META.O) developed.

Instead, Humane is selling a gadget that doesn’t have a conventional screen and communicates with the user nearly exclusively through artificial intelligence. The virtual assistant attempts to outpace competitors by crafting messages in the user’s voice and providing a “Catch Me Up” function to condense an unorganized email inbox. In addition, the pin has a camera that may capture images or scan things, such as food, and provide the user with an estimated nutritional value.

“Ai Pin is the embodiment of our vision to integrate AI into the fabric of daily life, enhancing our capabilities without overshadowing our humanity,” Chaudhri stated in a press release.

According to the firm, the Ai Pin will go on sale in the US on November 16. Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, Microsoft, and other donors have contributed $241 million to Humane.
