It Has Stars In Its Eyes

The 2027 Maybach S-Class as a whole is a relatively light refresh, but the changes Mercedes made certainly increase the distinctiveness of the car. Among the biggest styling changes is the new grille, which Mercedes says is a whole 20% larger than the outgoing one. Most of that increase is in verticality, which is further emphasized by the vertical chrome slats. The surround is fully illuminated, as is the Maybach wordmark at the top. As an option, Mercedes even offers an illuminated three-pointed star hood ornament, to ensure the car is identifiable even in pitch dark.

Those aren’t the only branding exercises, either. The lower grilles now feature grids of the double-M Maybach badge, just like on the Maybach SL. Unlike the Maybach SL, the new Maybach S-Class gets headlights with three-pointed star running lights. They’re matched by new taillights that also feature star designs, plus some rose gold-finish accents. Those go well with available wheels with more gold accents and available self-righting center caps. The carryover glowing Maybach logos on the rear pillars ensure everyone can see what you have at any angle and time of day.

Inside, the Maybach S-Class now gets the “Hyperscreen” dash as a standard feature. It puts the 14.4-inch center infotainment screen and a 12.3-inch passenger-side screen under a single giant piece of glass. The driver still gets a 3D 12.3-in. screen for instruments, which sits in a more conventional position. The air vents with the Hyperscreen are better integrated, as are the few haptic buttons below the infotainment screen. Rear passengers get dual 13.1-in. entertainment screens that can be controlled with newly designed remotes. Those remotes can also control climate control and sunshades. The cabin should be even quieter, too, thanks to extra insulation.

The V8 Makes More Power

The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class will still be available with two different engines. The S 580 still has a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 with mild hybrid assist, but it’s a fair bit more powerful. It now makes 530 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque. Those are increases of 34 hp and 37 lb-ft. Mercedes also claims that the power increase will drop the 0-60 mph time from 4.7 seconds to 4.3. That actually means the V8 is now as quick to 60 as the V12 version, and both have a top speed of 130 mph.

With the V8 now rivaling the S 680’s twin-turbo 6.0-liter V12, you might think Mercedes would’ve upgraded that model, but that’s not the case. The engine is unchanged, though, making 621 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque. Still, those are bigger numbers than those for the V8, including cylinder count and displacement. It’s also a more exclusive engine than ever, as it’s only available in the U.S. and other select markets, such as those in the Middle East. Both engines come with a 9-speed automatic transmission.

Mercedes didn’t stop with engine tweaks, though. It also upgraded the driver assist and technology systems. The Maybach S-Class models get enough computing power and sensors to handle its MB.Drive Assist Pro system. The feature will allow for point-to-point hands-free driving assist, even in cities. The feature is supposed to be added via an over-the-air update in the near future. The car will also feature air suspension that can get information from other cars and cloud data to preemptively adjust damping settings.

Mercedes hasn’t given prices for the new Maybachs, but we would expect them to be a bit more expensive than before. The current S 580 has a starting MSRP of $207,150, and the S 680’s starting MSRP is $244,400. The new Maybachs go on sale in the second half of this year, and pricing will likely come just before the on-sale date
