Google launches Pixel 8, smartwatch with new AI feature

On Wednesday, Alphabet’s Google (GOOGL.O) introduced two new products: the Pixel 8 smartphone and a new wristwatch. Both of these products incorporate Google’s artificial intelligence (AI) technology more thoroughly into the consumer electronics produced by the business.

Although sales of Google’s Pixel smartphone are a fraction of those of Apple’s (AAPL.O) iPhone, the Pixel was meant to demonstrate how Android devices push the limits of the now available technology. Consumers who prefer the Android devices without modifications made by other phone manufacturers are big fans of Pixels. This demographic also includes photography aficionados.

With the release of its newest mobile CPU, the Tensor G3, Google has strengthened its Pixel lineup. Users will now be able to process more data locally on their devices as well as on the cloud thanks to the new Google custom chip, which features enhanced artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning capabilities.

During the Made by Google event that took place on Wednesday in New York City, officials revealed that the AI features may help with photography, summarizing web pages, and preventing spam calls.

The more expensive Pixel 8 Pro model has an app called Thermometer that may assess an individual’s inside temperature, pending clearance from the Food and Drug Administration.

Both the Pixel 8 and the Pixel Pro 8 have starting pricing of $699 and $999 respectively, which is an increase of $100 over the prices of the devices from the previous generation. They will be accessible as of the 12th of October.

IDC analyst Ryan Reith believes that having AI on the device or client will be a major subject for the industry in the near future. “It was clear that Google was focused on driving the mobile AI message in today’s event,” Reith said.

“Especially in the United States, this lineup has the potential to drive higher market share for Google if it is supported by effective marketing.”

Apple introduced a new line of iPhones one month ago, which had a casing made of titanium, a CPU with increased processing speed, and enhanced capabilities for playing video games.

The fact that Apple did not raise pricing for the iPhone 15 was the most surprising thing about it, given the general decline in sales of smartphones throughout the world.

According to IDC, the Google Pixel comes in at 12 in total shipments, with a market share of 0.9%.

The most recent improvements could make Google’s Pixel phones more appealing to customers shopping throughout the holiday season.

According to IDC, the United States is the most important market, accounting for around 39% of Pixel’s worldwide shipments. Japan comes in second, with 29%, and the United Kingdom comes in third, with 9%.

Google also revealed plans to add generative AI skills to its virtual assistant. These capabilities will allow the virtual assistant to perform things like help customers plan trips or catch up on emails and then ask follow-up questions.

The firm introduced the Google Watch 2, an improved version of the company’s initial wristwatch, which was available for purchase in October 2022 for a starting price of $349. It comes with a sophisticated artificial intelligence-driven health-tracking function and a digital crown.
