Apple has now officially unveiled their newest piece of tech, the surprise to no one iPhone 7, which is showcased to have water and dust resistant properties. The new iPhone also comes with an unexpected but long rumored twist: the 2017 phone is missing their classical headset port feature. The company premiered their new iPhone on September 7th at their San Francisco presentation event after weeks of leaked pictures and information about the new iPhone was posted throughout the web.
Apple representatives commented that instead of the usual iPhone’s headphone jack, the new phone will use Apple’s new developed Lightning charging port to connect to a headset. The company has suggested for their new iPhone customers to connect to their phones by using a wireless Bluetooth headphone to listen to music on their new product. Although the iPhone 7 will include an adapter to connect to traditional or analog headphones, some of their customers are concerned that they are being pushed to embrace new (expensive) technology.
Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior VP of worldwide marketing, commented that the reason why Apple is eliminating their usual headphone port is because the new change will help the iPhone have more evolutional tech components than ever before. Schiller also stated that the elimination of the iPhone’s headset jack also exemplifies Apple’s courage to move technologically forward and also assumes the new tech will better for their customers in the long run.
Comparing the new iPhone 7 to the water-resistant Galaxy S7 Android smartphone, many Apple commenters are accusing the company of still playing catch up with their rival Samsung. Apple representative commented that although the new iPhone 7 covers water, splash, and dust resistant features, the phone isn’t designed to withstand a complete immersion of water.
The iPhone 7, which has a 4.7-inch screen, and the iPhone 7 Plus, with a 5.5-inch screen, will be shipped to 29 selected countries on September 16th. The iPhone 7 will start at 649 dollars, which was the same price iPhone 6’s was priced at during their first launch. Instead of the base iPhone 6 model only coming with 16 GB for the 649-dollar price tag, the new phone will have a double amount of storage at 32 GB. Apple will also include a 128 GB and 256 GB options for the new iPhone 7. The new iPhone 7 will be available to pre-order on September 9th.
