Meta is delaying the launch of its Phoenix mixed-reality glasses until 2027. According to an internal memo seen by Business Insider, the company wants more time to get everything right.
The glasses, previously called Puffin, are expected to weigh about 100 grams. However, their displays and processing power are not as advanced as those in Apple’s Vision Pro.
Mixed reality lets digital elements interact with the real world. Meta hopes the Phoenix glasses will expand their efforts in this field, alongside their Quest headsets and Ray-Ban smart glasses.
The delay comes as Meta looks to cut costs in its metaverse division. Bloomberg News reported that the company may reduce the Reality Labs budget by up to 30%. Meta is aiming to be more efficient while continuing its work on mixed reality projects.
Meta has not commented publicly on the delay. It appears the company wants to ensure the glasses meet high standards before launch. The Phoenix glasses are expected to play a key role in Meta’s strategy to compete in the mixed reality market.
