Meta faces record EU privacy penalties for Facebook data transfer to US

Two sources claimed Meta Platforms Inc (META.O) might face a record E.U. privacy fine for failing to comply with a top E.U. court’s warning on Facebook’s E.U. user data transfer to U.S. servers. In addition, according to sources, Amazon.com Inc (AMZN.O)’s 746 million euros ($821.20 million) penalties will be surpassed.

Meta declined to comment, while the Irish DPC and European Commission did not immediately respond to Reuters’ requests for comment.

Because U.S. spy agencies might utilize Facebook’s lawful mechanism to transmit European user data, E.U. regulators led by Ireland’s Data Protection Commissioner Helen Dixon have finalized a prohibition.

They gave the Irish DPC 30 days to halt Facebook’s transatlantic data flows in April. Mid-May may see the ban.

In 2020, Europe’s highest court invalidated an EU-U.S. data-sharing deal over surveillance concerns.
Meta warned last year that a ban on its data transfer mechanism from Europe to the U.S. could compel it to halt Facebook services in Europe.
