MG Motor, previously known as Morris Garages, launched its second EV in India, the Comet EV, targeting urbanites searching for a compact car.
The British brand, owned by Chinese state-owned SAIC Motor, claims its new hatchback is ideal for youthful South Asian commuters. The Comet is inexpensive, starting at $9,700 (7.98 lakh Indian Rupees). It’s cute and colorful. The firm also offers over 250 decals and graphics to customize vehicles.
The car’s 4.2-meter turning radius and tiny size make city transportation easier. In addition, it easily fits four people.
MG Motor India president Rajeev Chaba noted during the vehicle’s inauguration that the Comet EV is for individuals seeking a sensible answer to urban mobility concerns.
The MG Comet, which looks to be a rebadged version of the Wuling Air EV that SAIC-GM-Wuling (SGMW) debuted in Indonesia and China in June last year, has a 143-mile range. Its 17.3 kWh Li-Ion battery supports wireless Apple Car Play and Android Auto.
MG Motor plans to launch two additional EVs nationwide by 2024 to produce 30% of its domestic sales. In 2019, the business launched its first EV SUV, the ZS, in India.
Bookings for the Comet EV begin May 15, with deliveries following.
MG Motor will compete with Tata Motors, whose most cheap EV, the Tiago EV, costs $10,600 (8.69 lakh Indian Rupees).
The Comet EV’s price and attributes make it a potential alternative in India, where EVs make up barely 1% of the over 3 million cars sold annually. However, New Delhi is investigating MG Motor for financial violations. Moreover, existing competitors like Tata Motors compete with the firm in the burgeoning EV industry with their offers and local reach.
