Sony’s PlayStation VR Headset Sales Top One Million Units

Virtual reality gaming is a breakthrough in gaming that has been sweeping the nation. Sony is no stranger to the virtual reality world, the company released it’s VR headset on October 13, 2016, and it has been a huge hit with gamers ever since.

The VR headset offers games such as Batman: Arkham VR, Farpoint, PlayStation VR Worlds, and even the newest installment in the Resident Evil series, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. The sales of Sony’s virtual reality headset have actually been doing so well, to the point that they have now sold more than one million units it’s virtual reality headset.

Atushi Morita, president of Sony Interactive Entertainment Japan Asia, stated that the sales of the headset “exceeded our expectations. We are boosting production and a supply shortage should be solved accordingly.” Approximately 2 million virtual reality units were shipped worldwide within the first three months of 2017, Sony was able to sell 429,000 units to top the rankings.

Sony is not the only company in the virtual reality competition, as Oculus’ Oculus Rift, HTC’s Vive, and Samsung’s Samsung Gear VR are all popular contenders in the virtual reality race, but Sony seems to be in good standing where their sales are concerned. Sales analysts state that Sony will be able to create an early lead in the VR sales race because of its low price tag and by marketing the VR headset alongside the company’s PlayStation 4 console.

The headset retails for $399, a cheaper expense than Oculus’ $599 Oculus Rift VR headset and HTC’s $799 Vive VR Headset, though the Samsung’s Samsung Gear VR is cheaper, the selection of games and applications pales in comparison to the three prior headsets mentioned. Virtual reality is still a relatively new advancement in gaming technology leaving plenty of room for growth. Morita stated that Sony’s current progress in VR technology is only the beginning and will soon integrate the technology into the functions of television sets, “I believe that VR technology is the (greatest) innovation since the birth of television. VR allows you to travel to World Heritage sites or to space while staying at home. It’s like a time machine or a door to anywhere.” PlayStation has become one of the more prominent companies making their mark in the virtual reality world. With further development, Sony’s advancement with virtual reality may lead to an even more amazing breakthrough for the gaming community! Happy gaming!
