After two years of development, Spotify tests a playlist that automatically downloads your recent favorites.
CEO Daniel Ek said that Spotify is testing “Your Offline Mix.” He didn’t elaborate. The release date is undetermined.
Ek’s screenshot shows these playlists can hold hours of music. This is useful if you neglect to download music before flying. Spotify offers offline playback of playlists.
Some users have tweeted about seeing this feature in their apps. It’s unclear where Spotify is launching the offline mix. The feature’s free availability is also unclear. Spotify has been contacted for comment.
In 2020, reverse engineer Jane Manchun Wong revealed Spotify was developing an offline mix capability. It wasn’t released. Ek’s confirmation suggests the feature will be available to consumers soon.
YouTube Music’s “Offline mixtape” function competes with Spotify’s. If users enable “Smart download,” the Google-owned service can automatically download 500 songs from different playlists.
Spotify has exceeded 500 million users, per its recent earnings call.
