The smart watch industry has been expanding rapidly in the last several years. One of the latest iterations of this expanding industry is from Tag Heuer and is rumored to be released on March 14. Known as the Tag Heuer Connected Modular, the rumored smartwatch is rumored to come with unique features and hallmark characteristics that may not have been seen yet. The Modular will be released with Android Wear 2.0, a more popular watch OS that would greatly give it an opportunity for much higher sales.
The name of this smart watch is rather unique. The word “Modular” refers to the changeable watch case that comes along with the device, allowing for a greater sense of consumer customization. The original Android Wear 2.0 powered watch body can easily be replaced with another body. For example, a user would have the option to switch from the traditional “smart watch” body to a classic/traditional watch very quickly. If this feature were to be implemented into this watch, that feature alone may sway some consumers to buy this watch. Originally when the Tag Heuer Connected Modular was announced, many people were interested in the watch but were too discouraged by the expensive price tag. Tag Heuer stated that the modular design would allow a user to be ready for any situation at any given time.
The Tag Heuer Connected Modular will be coming with several features, including swappable watch straps, clasps, in different colors and unique lugs. But, similar to most other customizable smart watches, the interchangeable straps with different color options may be sold as accessories instead of actually being sold with the smart watch. This would allow users to have a greater sense of choice when they use different straps as they can just buy the colors they like instead of being given a stock strap they would not use.
According to Jean-Claude Biver, the head of Tag Heuer, the Tag Heuer Connected Modular will be coming in two different sizes. The larger of the sizes will be a premium smartwatch that will feature a system of payment through the smart watch, and a GPS which would track user’s location for up to one meter. The processor of this watch is being manufactured in Switzerland and Tag Heuer had struck a licensing deal with Intel around December.
Details regarding the pricing of the smart watch have not been released yet, but many are estimating the price to be steep due to the device’s premium characteristic and high-end features. While the smart watch is rumored to be released next month, users are becoming very excited about the release of the TAG Heuer Connected Modular.
Looking at other popular smart watches, including the Apple Watch and Samsung Gear, the Tag Heuer Connected Modular will give these two “giants” of smart watches competition, even though many of the features and characteristics of the watches are very similar. As the smart watch industry grows, more companies will begin focusing their resources on creating smart watches that will display the innovation these companies are creating.
