On Thursday, Telecom Italia (TIM) (TLIT.MI) introduced a novel microchip that it had invented. The microchip improves cybersecurity in various industries, including mobile devices, cloud infrastructure, and defense systems.

The news was made at a ceremony in Rome attended by Italy’s Minister of Industry, Adolfo Urso, and Pietro Labriola, Chief Executive Officer of TIM.

TIM asserted that the microchip “represents a new tool for strengthening technological autonomy and sovereignty within the framework of national and European cybersecurity strategies” since it enables communications to be completely encrypted.

In addition, the business stated that it is designed to protect vital infrastructure from potential cyberattacks, including but not limited to dams, electricity grids, water networks, and railway tracks.

TIM’s business, Telsy, which develops cybersecurity services and delivers encrypted communications technology to customers such as public administration, was responsible for the entire design process of the secure chip. The chip was manufactured through a supply chain in Europe.

Last month, nations within the European Union and parliamentarians inside the EU agreed on laws that will safeguard computers, mobile applications, and intelligent household gadgets connected to the internet from cyber threats. This comes in response to a wave of cyber assaults and ransom demands over the past few years.
