At 1Password, we are excited to announce the introduction of passkey management, a groundbreaking technology that paves the way for a passwordless future. As of June 6th, 2023, all 1Password account holders will gain access to this cutting-edge feature, allowing them to save and manage their passkeys seamlessly. Passkeys utilize biometric-based login technology, enabling users to eliminate traditional passwords and opt for their device’s authentication methods, such as fingerprint sensors, Windows Hello, or Face ID, for enhanced security and convenience.
Understanding Passkeys and Their Advantages
The FIDO Alliance developed public key cryptography, a safe authentication method, upon which passkeys are based. The FIDO Alliance comprises tech giants like Apple, Google, and Microsoft, which have joined forces to revolutionize online authentication. With passkeys, users can sign into apps and services using their device’s biometric authentication, eliminating the need for fixed passwords and vulnerable verification systems like 2FA or SMS.
The advantages of passkeys are manifold:
Enhanced Security against Hacking and Phishing Attacks
Traditional passwords are susceptible to hacking and phishing attacks, posing a significant threat to online security. Passkeys, on the other hand, offer superior protection by relying on biometric factors unique to each user’s device. This ensures that no login or transmitted code can be stolen, enhancing the overall security of online accounts and sensitive information.
Ease of Use and Convenience
Passkeys provide a seamless login experience, eliminating the need to remember complex passwords. By utilizing biometric authentication methods, such as fingerprint sensors or Face ID, users can access their accounts effortlessly with just a touch or a glance.
Accessing the 1Password Passkey Open Beta
To experience the revolutionary benefits of passkeys, 1Password account holders can participate in the open beta starting June 6th, 2023. To access the open beta, users need to download the 1Password beta browser extension for supported browsers, including Safari, Firefox, or Chromium-based browsers such as Chrome, Edge, Arc, and Brave. During this phase, passkey support for mobile devices is still under development and will be made available at a later date.
Exploring Passkey Integrations and Compatibility
While passkeys are gaining traction as the future of authentication, widespread adoption will take time. However, 1Password is dedicated to supporting multiple platforms and devices with its Universal Sign-On cross-platform syncing. This cross-platform approach offers more flexibility and convenience compared to single-ecosystem solutions.
1Password has also created a directory of websites, apps, and services that already support passkey login technology. Some of the supported platforms include Google accounts, Microsoft accounts, Twitter accounts, eBay accounts, Best Buy accounts, GitHub accounts, and more. Additionally, users have the option to vote on where passkey support should be added next, encouraging companies to embrace this cutting-edge authentication method.
The Road Ahead: Replacing Master Passwords with Passkeys
While the open beta allows users to save and manage passkeys, the ability to replace the master password with a passkey will arrive later in July 2023. This feature, once introduced, will further streamline the authentication process for 1Password users.
Embracing the Passwordless Future with 1Password
At 1Password, we are committed to staying at the forefront of innovation in password management and online security. The introduction of passkey support is a significant step towards a passwordless future where authentication is seamless, secure, and convenient. We are excited to empower our users with the latest advancements in online authentication, enabling them to enjoy enhanced security and a hassle-free login experience.
