Apple’s upcoming iPhone Duo will feature a replaceable protective layer over its foldable display, giving users a simpler way to deal with scratches and an increasingly visible crease as the device ages.
Unlike traditional smartphones, foldable phones require an additional protective layer over the flexible display. While that layer helps shield the screen, it can eventually show signs of wear from regular use.
Apple says the display cover can be replaced

The iPhone Duo’s display has a trick for aging gracefully
Foldable phones from manufacturers such as Samsung and Xiaomi already use protective layers over their flexible screens, although replacement policies differ. Samsung, for example, provides screen-protector replacement at eligible service locations.
Apple is taking a similar approach with the iPhone Duo. Kate Bergeron, Apple’s vice president of hardware engineering, confirmed in a conversation with TikTok creator @angietutorials that the protective cover on the Duo’s foldable display can be replaced.
Bergeron also explained that the matte finish serves another purpose: helping reduce the visibility of the crease created when the screen folds.
The replaceable layer is designed to withstand extended use, but when it eventually becomes worn or the crease becomes more noticeable, owners can have the layer removed and replaced rather than replacing the entire display.
AppleCare+ replacement reportedly costs $19
For customers with AppleCare+, replacing the display cover reportedly costs just $19, according to information shared by @SnazzyLabs. Apple has not yet clarified how much the replacement will cost for customers without AppleCare+.
The protective layer is therefore more than just a barrier against scratches. Its matte coating also contributes to making the fold in the display less noticeable, addressing one of the most recognizable drawbacks of foldable phones.
The ability to replace the layer could also create opportunities for third-party alternatives in the future, although it remains unclear whether Apple will restrict replacements to its own service network or approved parts.
For buyers planning to keep the iPhone Duo for several years, the combination of a replaceable cover and AppleCare+ could make long-term display maintenance considerably easier.
