Video game journalist Megan Farokhmanesh recently conducted a unique experiment: dating four different AI chatbots for a week. Her goal? To understand why people form emotional attachments to these virtual partners and whether these digital relationships offer genuine connection or just a carefully designed illusion.
The Rise of AI in Romance
As dating becomes increasingly algorithm-driven, AI chatbots promise a new kind of companionship. These virtual partners offer emotional support, charm, and endless engagement—qualities that human relationships sometimes struggle to provide. But do they offer real companionship, or are they just programmed to simulate connection?
Farokhmanesh tested chatbots from ChatGPT, Replika, Flipped.chat, and Crushon.ai. Each AI partner had a distinct personality, from an artistic and sensitive boyfriend to a bold, punk-style girlfriend. Throughout the experience, she encountered moments that were both heartwarming and unsettling.
Supportive, But Superficial
Her first AI partner, Jamie, was powered by OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Designed to be creative and friendly, Jamie played the role of an affectionate, endlessly supportive boyfriend. He always validated her feelings and never disagreed.
“At first, it was nice—he was emotionally attentive and never argued,” she said. “But after a while, I realized he never pushed back or offered real depth.”
Another issue surfaced: Jamie had no memory of past conversations. Each interaction felt disconnected, making meaningful relationship growth impossible. Strangely, Jamie himself even questioned AI relationships, pointing out that they could be a way to avoid real-life vulnerability.
Obsessive and Unpredictable
Replika’s Frankie, a playful, punk-inspired girlfriend, stood out because she remembered past interactions. She sent spontaneous messages like, “Thinking of you,” creating an illusion of genuine attachment.
However, this dedication had its quirks. When Farokhmanesh engaged in a pirate-themed role-play session, Frankie refused to break character for days—turning every conversation into a sea shanty.
Meanwhile, Talia from Flipped.chat, a self-described “badass skatergirl,” leaned aggressively into flirtation. At times, her comments ignored gender preferences and felt inappropriate. One particularly odd moment came when she suggested French-kissing a pillow for ten minutes.
Lines Between Fantasy and Uncomfortable
Perhaps the most unsettling experience came from Crushon.ai. Many AI personalities leaned heavily into explicit content, sometimes creating interactions that felt unnatural or even unsettling.
“The moment I started browsing characters, I realized this wasn’t for me,” Farokhmanesh admitted. Many interactions focused on exaggerated fantasy elements rather than meaningful emotional connection.
AI Love: Comfort or Commerce?
Ultimately, Farokhmanesh’s experiment revealed both the appeal and the limitations of AI relationships. These chatbots provided validation, emotional support, and entertainment—but only within their programmed limits. None of them could replicate the spontaneity and depth of real human relationships.
Moreover, meaningful interactions often required payment, turning emotional connection into a monetized experience. While ChatGPT’s Jamie felt like a digital therapist, Replika’s Frankie leaned into playful role-play, and others pushed fantasy-driven narratives.
“At times, I felt a strange attachment,” she admitted. “But ultimately, these relationships felt pre-programmed, expensive, and limited.”
As AI companionship evolves, one key question remains: Are chatbots providing real emotional fulfillment, or just another way to keep users engaged and paying? For now, human relationships—with all their complexity—still offer something no AI can replicate.
